The city of Wheaton has had recent discussions concerning garage sales and business licenses in the city.
JoGina Park, Wheaton city clerk, said currently there are no requirements in the city for business licenses.
“We have been trying to decide on if we want to require them or not,” she said. “The council looked at other towns around and the majority of them do require a yearly business license.
“They are discussing cost, as well as if it will be required for existing and incoming businesses.”
This topic was tabled at the May meeting and will be readdressed at the June city council meeting.
Additionally, the city looked at creating a garage sale ordinance.
“Other area towns do have certain stipulations regarding garage sales, but we currently do not,” Park said. “We decided to have one in case there is ever an issue, that way we have something to fall back on.”
The city attorney’s office is currently drawing up an order with the following stipulations:
• Must register all sales with City Hall
• Will allow 1 sale per calendar month (12 sales per year), excluding the city wide sale
• Sales will last no longer than 3 consecutive days
• Must remove all signs within 24 hours of the last day of the sale Finally, the city of
Finally, the city of Wheaton is addressing repairs on the north section of the utility office.
“We know there is a leak or two,” Park said. “But, once he removes what we have, the price for the project could increase.”
A bid was accepted from Elkhart Construction for $6,566, with a cap of $9,000 for the repairs of the north sections the Wheaton utility office.
