November 8, 1972

Mrs. G.A. McCorkle of rural Monett was appointed chairman of the Barry County Heart Fund. Active in many functions in Cassville, Mrs. McCorkle was responsible for Heart Fund drives in country communities in February, in addition to other functions of the Heart Association.

Miss Holly Horner, a junior at Cassville High School, was named Sweetheart of the Future Farmers of America in its annual barnwarming held in early November in the school gym. Assisting in the coronation were chapter officials Faron Leamon and Don Cupps.

40 years ago

November 3, 1982 South Barry County Red Cross’s Chapter Bloodmobile efforts reached the regular quota of 95 pints but failed to gain a special 125 pint effort. Mrs. Alberta Reid, chapter blood chairman, said 106 volunteers presented themselves at the First Baptist Church location. The special quota was set by regional Red Cross officials due to special need for blood replacement throughout the area.

An unprecedented turnout of Barry County off-year voters gave unofficial victories to Democrats in five of seven contested races. County-wide there were 12 offices to be billed. Republicans took seven of those, four in unopposed races.

30 years ago

October 28, 1992 With the November election approaching, just under 200 supervisory personnel were in charge of voting in Barry County. County Clerk Rex Stumpff said the 50 supervisory and 140 regular judges would function in 26 precincts.

Before the last 10 days voter registration numbers were set at 19,500 by Stumpff’s office with another 1,300 registering before the deadline on Oct. 14.

Stumpff said he was anticipating a heavier-than-usual turn-out of voters at the polls for the election and the post office reported an estimated 1,500 absentee ballots flowing through the mail.
