Cassville sixth in Spokane
The Cassville boys basketball team (10-8) finished in sixth place at the Spokane Tournament last week. The No. 3 Wildcats were upset in the opener by No. 6 Blue Eye, 45-34, then bounced back with a 62-25 win over No. 7 Bradleyville. The Wildcats met a Barry County foe in the fifth-place game, falling to No. 5 Southwest in a close match-up, 48-47. The Wildcats hosted McDonald County on Tuesday and will host East Newton on Jan. 31.
Lady Wildcats battle in Bolivar
The Cassville girls basketball team (11-8) met stiff Class 5 and Class 6 competition in the Bolivar Tournament last week. The No. 6 Lady Wildcats fell to the No. 3-ranked host in the opener, 67-28, then to No. 7 Camdenton in the consolation semifinals, 51-21. Cassville finished with a 49-40 loss to Class 6 and No. 8 Smith-Cotton. The Lady Wildcats resumed conference play on Tuesday against McDonald County. They will host East Newton on Thursday.
Southwest fifth in Spokane
The Southwest boys basketball team (11-4) played its way to fifth place in the Spokane Tournament last week and had one player named to the All-Tournament team. The No. 5 Trojans opened the tournament against No. 4 Reeds Spring, falling to the Wolves, 45-39. Lucas Paulsen and Kasen Holder led in scoring with 10 each, Brendyn Paulsen added 9, Zak Corwin 6, Brandon Brooks 2 and Charlie Pippin 2. In the consolation semifinals, Southwest met familiar foe and No. 8-seed Exeter, producing a 62-28 win. Brendyn Paulsen led with 16 points, Brooks scored 12, Holder 9, Lucas Paulsen 8, Corwin 7, Coy Shrum 6 and Pippin 4. In the fifth-place game against Cassville, the Trojans pulled out a 48-47 victory. Corwin scored 14 points, Brendyn Paulsen 13, Broks 8, Holder 7 and Lucas Paulsen 6. For his efforts all tournament, Brendyn Paulsen was named to the All-Tournament team. Southwest hosted Billings on Tuesday and returns to action on Friday on the road at Spokane.
Lady Trojans sixth in Galena tourney
The Southwest girls basketball team (8-10) went 1-2 in the Galena Lady Bear Classic last week. The No. 5 Lady Trojans started the tournament with a 51-47 loss to Galena, then rebounded with a 44-27 win over Exeter. Southwest finished with a 47-35 loss to Reeds Spring. The Lady Trojans played at Billings on Monday and will host Spokane on Thursday.
Wheaton snaps streak with pair of wins
The Wheaton boys basketball team (6-14) said goodbye to a six-game losing streak last week, earning a pair of victories on the road. The Bulldogs topped Miller, 50-41 on Jan. 17, then went to Hurley and produced a second win, 59-41. Wheaton will keep the train rolling this week on the road. The Bulldogs traveled to McAuley Catholic on Tuesday, and they will face College Heights on Friday.
Eagles trudge through January
The Purdy boys basketball team (11-8) dumped a six-game winless streak with a district victory at home Friday. The Eagles fell on the road at Sarcoxie on Jan. 17, 47-35, then produced a 58-39 win at home against Verona on Friday. Purdy hosted Blue Eye on Tuesday, and they will host Lockwood on Friday.
