It was the last regular-season tournament of the year, and the Cassville boys showed they are ready for districts.
Six of the eight Wildcats competing reached the championship match in their respective weight classes, and two came home with gold medals. As a team, Cassville finished fourth with 279 points. Springdale Har-Ber (Ark.) was third with 284.5 points, Blair Oaks second with 404 and Seneca first with 433.
Leading the charge for the Wildcats was the tandem of Akhilleus Arguelles, at 132 pounds, and DJ Glidewell, at 285 pounds.
Arguelles wrestled four matches in the opening rounds, coming up with a major decision, two pins and a win by medical forfeit. In the semifinals, he pinned Springdale (Ark.) wrestler Dusty Frey in 4:55 after leading 12-2, and in the semifinals, he fell Hollister’s Bryson Whitman in 1:12 when up 4-3.
The championship match saw Arguelles earn a pair of takedowns in the first period and a reversal in the second, going up 6-1 before finding a pin of Versailles’ Matthew Radefeld in 2:42.
Glidewell earned pins in his three opening round matches in 2:10, 1:55 and 1:37. In the quarterfinals, Glidewell earned a takedown he turned into a pin in 35 seconds, and in the semifinals, he led 2-0 with a second period reversal before pinning Versailles’ Gavin Brantley in 3:06.
In the championship match, Glidewell earned an escape point in the second period and his opponent, Adrian’s William Brown, earned one of his own to tie it in the third period. But, 34 seconds later, a penalty saw Brown disqualified and Glidwell winning the gold.
Four other Wildcats earned silver medals, including Colton Roark at 144, Riley James at 150, Tristan Thompson at 157 and Jake Anthonysz at 165.
Roark pinned all his opponents (less a medical forfeit in the quarterfinals), but fell in the championship to familiar foe Andrew Manley, of Seneca, due to an inury.
James earned three pins and a major decision on his route to the championship, where he fell to Adrian’s Justice Vickers in a 6-3 decision.
Thompson earned a pin and two decisions in the opening rounds, then pinned his quarterfinal opponent and earned a decision in the semifinals. In the championship, he lost a 9-5 decision to Adrian’s Michal McCoy.
Anthonysz earned three pins in round matches and two decisions in the knockout round. In the championship, he faced Blair Oakls’ Zach Rackers, falling in a major decision.
Ethan Sizemore, at 215 pounds, fought his way to fifth place, and 113-pounder Noah Uria took seventh.
