‘Let’s Get Growing’

Barry County Master Gardeners are helping locals to “get growing” by hosting a garden workshop on March 4.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center, located at 602 West St. in Cassville. The primary mission of Master Gardeners of Missouri is to educate others and encourage them in their gardening.

Doors will open at 9 a.m., and the program will begin at 9:30 a.m. There will be some local vendors selling their products, and there will be door prizes and lots of snacks.

Lainey Harvick, who with husband Joseph owns Harvick Farms Nursery just outside of Cassville, will give attendees a preview of new plants available in 2023.

“Lainey and Joseph got off to a great start last year and are going to be bigger and better this year,” a Master Gardeners press release said. “They are committed to educating gardeners, as well as marketing garden products and have planned an education building to house classes.”

Angela Brattin, Small Farm Specialist with Lincoln University, will speak about maximizing the quality and quantity of garden produce. Brattin is a Master Gardener with and is passionate about growing vegetables.

“Judging from photos of her garden harvest, Angela will have lots of tips to share with us,” the release said.

Kelly McGowan, Horticulture Specialist with MU Extension in Greene County, will share ideas in choosing the right trees and shrubs for home landscapes. Kelly will also update attendees on the results of the lavender trials in Springfield.

“We have planned a time for your questions; and if we can’t answer that day, we will get back to you,” the release said.

To attend the workshop, people must pre-register with Barry County Extension at 417-8473161. The cost is $10. The cost for registration at the door is $12. Pay should be by cash or check.
