Anita Sue Mitchell

Anita Sue (Brown) Mitchell passed away peacefully in the Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, Missouri on January 31, 2023.

Sue was born March 30, 1932, in Cassville, the daughter of Kenneth and Avo (Cargile) Brown. She was proud to call Cassville home for most of her life. Sue graduated from Cassville High School. She married Bob Mitchell in 1949. Bob and Sue lived briefly in San Diego, CA, where Bob was stationed in the U.S. Navy and Sue worked as a dental assistant. They returned to Cassville in 1953, to begin raising their family. Sue was very involved in multiple aspects of the family’s business — The Cassville Democrat; in civic and community events; and with a host of school activities.

In addition to working at the newspaper office, she earned her beautician’s license and enjoyed making many new acquaintances and helping clients prepare for special occasions or just ‘take a little off the top.’ Upon retirement, Sue was happiest looking through the windshield while she and Bob traveled across the country to visit their grandkids. She was a talented painter, gardener, cook and entertainer. From her high school days through much of her adult life, Sue sang for many weddings, funerals and special events throughout the community.

She was a faithful member of the choir at First Christian Church. She sang with the Treble Tones ladies’ sextet and performed with the group throughout Southwest Missouri. She also cherished playing bridge with her special group of ladies. She was a member of the Cassville United Methodist Church, and her Christian faith was a cornerstone for her life and family.

Sue is survived and will be greatly missed by her husband of 74 years, Bob; her children, son Bruce (Janice) of Colorado Springs, CO and daughter, Shelley Bartkoski (Dennis) of Leawood, KS; grandchildren who loved her as Nana; Sean Mitchell (Carrie), Lindsley Grebenik (Dole), Andrew Parsons, (Janna), and Carly Mitchell (Rob Sumner); nine great-grandchildren; nephew Stann Sutton (Beverly) of Tulsa OK, and Neely the cat. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Jane Sutton of Tulsa.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Friday, March 31, 2023 at Cassville United Methodist Church in Cassville, under direction of Fohn Funeral Home in Cassville. Pastor Jeff Fugitt will conduct the services. A reception will follow the service.

Memorial contributions may be made in Sue’s name to Cassville United Methodist Church or Kansas City Hospice House.
