Founders Kara Fletcher and Jessie Rex started the LEGO Club with the backing of the Eagle Rock Community Association and the Eagle Rock Friends of the Library.
The first meeting had 13 youth ages 4-14. While it was a small start, it didn’t stay that way for very long. By the end of the first year, more than 20 children had joined.
March 18 was a day that has been in the making for 10 years. Little did Club leaders know that when they started the Eagle Rock LEGO Club that it would still be going strong as ever.
What started small has turned into over 30 regular children that get to enjoy the creativity and interactions with other, equally creative minds.
Club members were excited to see 10 of our original children come back to help make the day even more special for local LEGO legend Kara Fletcher.
There was even a second- generation family for the day. The anniversary celebration started out like all LEGO Club days, with free play with bricks of all sizes and colors.
Then, the club moved on to the fun of circle time, featuring a special slideshow documenting the past 10 years. The videos shows some of the builds done throughout the years, including LEGO race cars, ducks, cows, giraffes, elephants, superheroes, pumpkins and many more made over the decade.
The Club then split the 30-plus children into two groups, the first group enjoying a snack and the exhibit of newsletters, pictures and the builds shown on tables. The second group built with Kara, Jessie and her fellow ARK-LUG Group. After everyone built their maze, the Club settled down for cake, crowns for its LEGO Queens, laughter and pictures of all the children with the LEGO ladies.
The day was a joint effort from Fletcher and Rex, The Eagle Rock Library and the Eagle Rock Community Association, library leaders said they couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.
“These two women have had many successes throughout the years but depending on which person you ask depends on what it is, both founders agree; however, the success and happiness they brought into this small community with LEGOs is their biggest success,” they said. “With the number of smiles and kids asking their parents to come back, there is no doubt that this club will be around for another 10 years.”
Fletcher has partnered with the Eagle Rock Library on many occasions to create a place of learning and creativity. She has also been a part of Summer Reading Programs for the Libraries of Barry and Lawrence.
Fletcher and Rex were also contestants on Lego Masters Season 1, which aired in 2020, appearing in three episodes of the first season and as members of the team, “The Higher the Hair, the Closer to God.”
