Construction picks up near Main Street

Intermittent rains late this last week diminished the city’s progress on its wastewater system upgrades, as the directional bore subcontractor did not start as expected, postponing until Monday.

For the week of May 15, Public Works Director David Brock said residents expect open trench excavation to continue in the 300 Block of 11th Street (between East Street and Mill).

“The subcontractor who will install the encasement pipe under Main (Business 37) was expected to begin work on Monday, May 15th,” he said.

Due to the construction, the following traffic restrictions should be anticipated through the week:

• Adjacent work zones will necessitate a threeblock closure of 11th street to through traffic; from Townsend to Main, Main to East and East to Mill.

• North/south traffic on Mill Street and East will be blocked intermittently as construction progresses westward

• North/south traffic on Townsend and Main Street will not be impeded.

• Local traffic will not be able access 11th Street from Main (use Townsend or East Street).

“I will send out an update if any substantial variations in this forecast develop,” Brock said. “The contractor will try to keep access open for local traffic, but there will likely be times when equipment or materials will block individual driveways. If residents need to come or go, they can simply inform someone on the construction crew, a city staff member or the project inspector, and they will get you in or out as soon as possible.

“This portion of the project may be very disruptive in the immediate area of the excavations, if anyone has questions or concerns issues, please let us know.”

Work on the trenchless rehabilitation is also expected to continue with cleaning and CCTV Inspections of the sewer pipe that will be relined. This work should cause no more than minor disruptions to drivers with short isolated lane closures.

“Please note, the pressurized water jets used to clean the lines can push sewer gases into nearby structures, particularly older structures that are not vented well,” Brock said. “Our apologies for this temporary inconvenience when and where it occurs.”
