The Cassville Wildcat Basketball Boosters is hosting Jackie Stiles for the second time in Cassville with a basketball camp slated for June 27 at Cassville High School.

Rachael Freeman, with the Boosters, said Arning put on the event last year, and since the Boosters is new this year, organizers wanted to make the camp happen again.

“Since we started the Basketball Boosters, we thought it would be a good kick-off for us,” she said. “With sponsors, we have reduced the cost to participate this year from $75 to $45 per camper. We’ve also reached out to other local schools, as far as Pierce City and Pea Ridge, Ark., to get all involved who are interested in basketball.”

Freeman said as of Monday, the camp had 46 signed up, compared to 70 total last year, and a majority of the participants so far are non-local.

“We’ve also opened it up to the high school players, which was not available last year,” Freeman said. “This is a way for people to get familiar with the Boosters and see we are behind Cassville boys and girls basketball from K-12, as well as all basketball in our community.”

Stiles is a former WNBA player who led the Southwest Missouri State University Lady Bears to the 2001 Final Four. She held the NCAA scoring record for 16 years, was a three-time NCAA All American and fourth pick in the 2001 WNBA draft, later named Rookie of the Year. Since retirement from playing, Stiles has coached at numerous universities and has since moved into private business.

“Bringing a professional basketball player with a resume like Jackie’s is not an opportunity we get in this area very often,” Freeman said. “I love the fact she’s so positive. for someone who faced so much adversity in her career, she always focuses on the positive, and I think the kids can feel that.”

The Jackie Stiles Basketball Camp will be held June 27, with session one from 1-4 p.m. for youth in grades 3-6, and session two from 4:30-7:30 p.m. for youth in grades 7-12.
