Wrestling squads win home tri

The Cassville boys and girls wrestling teams picked up some regular-season wins at home on Jan. 11, emerging victorious over Hollister and Reeds Spring. The Wildcats defeated the Tigers 66-18, winning all but one match out of the 11 contested. Cassville then edged out a closer result against the Wolves, 42-33, tasting victory in 8 of the 13 contested matches. The Lady Wildcats had only one contested match against each school, with Rebekah Fry and Saige Holman both earning pins within the first minute of action.

The Wildcats are back in action on Thursday at McDonald County, and the Big 8 Tournament is on Friday at Marshfield High School. The Lady Wildcats wrestle next at the Big 8 Tournament, set for today (Wednesday) in Seneca. They will also wrestle on Thursday in McDonald County.

Cassville wins consolation bracket in Seymour

The Cassville boys basketball team (6-9) rebounded from a first-round loss with a pair of wins in the Seymour Bank Classic, resulting in the Wildcats taking fifth place in the event. After falling to host Seymour, 74-57 on Jan. 8, Cassville, the No. 5 seed in the tournament faced No. 8 Bradleyville and earned a 97-61 victory, snapping a five-game skid. The Wildcats then secured fifth place with a 63-61 win over No. 7 Lighthouse Senior High. Cassville continues in tournament action this week at the 39th Annual Spokane Invitational. The No. 7 Wildcats open the tournament today (Wednesday) against No. 2 Strafford at 7 p.m. Other teams in the tournament, by seed, include: Greenwood, Blue Eye, Ash Grove, Southwest, Reeds Spring and Spokane. With a win over Strafford, Cassville plays the Blue Eye-Reeds Spring winner at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. A loss and the Wildcats face the same game’s loser at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The tournament concludes on Saturday.

Lady Wildcats playing in Marionville

The Cassville girls basketball team (6-7) takes back-to-back wins into tournament action this week in Marionville. Following a 49-31  win over Billings in the Southwest Tournament and a 42-38 home victory over Lamar, the No. 7 Lady Wildcats faced No. 2 Marionville on Tuesday at the Marionville Lady Comet Classic. The result was not available at presstime. Other teams in the tournament, by seed, include: Clever, Ash Grove, Crane, Monett, Spokane and Billings. With a win, Cassville will play the Ash Grove-Spokane winner on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. A loss and the Lady Wildcats face the same game’s loser at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Lady Tigers head to Galena

The Exeter girls basketball team (3-5) heads to the Galena Lady Bear Winter Classic this week. The No. 8 Lady Tigers open play at 5 p.m. on Thursday against No. 1 Fordland. The winner of that contest will face the winner of No. 4 New Covenant Academy and No. 5 Galena on Friday at 8:45 p.m., while the losers play on Friday at 5 p.m. The bottom of the bracket will see No. 2 Blue Eye face off against No. 7 Hurley and No. 3 RUSH against No. 6 Reeds Spring. The championship match is Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Exeter has fallen in its last two contests Jan 11 and 12, bested by Marionville, 72-19, and College Heights Christian, 64-42.

Trojans No. 5 seed in Spokane

The Southwest boys basketball team (11-3) take the No. 5 seed into the 39th Annual Spokane Invitational this week. The Trojans, with recent wins over Wheaton, 66-48, and Verona, 76-44, face No. 4 Ash Grove at 5:30 p.m. today (Wednesday). The winner faces No. 1 Greenwood or No. 8 Spokane at 6 p.m. on Thursday, and the losers play at 6 p.m. on Friday. In the bottom half ofd the bracket, No. 2 Strafford faced No. 7 Cassville and No. 3 Blue Eye faced No. 6 Reeds Spring.

Wheaton enters home swing

The Wheaton boys basketball team (9-6) entered a four-game home swing this week, with Homecoming on Friday. Coming off a 60-17 win over Thomas Jefferson, the Trojans hosted Miller on Tuesday and will host Hurley (Homecoming) on Friday, McAuley Catholic on Jan. 23 and College Heights Christian on Jan. 26.
