Barry County Soils and Crops focuses on cattle leasing

95th annual event set for Jan. 30 at First Christian Church

The University of Missouri Extension of Barry County has announced the 95th Barry County Soil and Crops conference, set for Jan. 30 at First Christian Church in Cassville.

“Over the past two years, we’ve seen a massive reduction in the regional cow herd due to drought limitations,” said Reagan Bluel, University of Missouri Extension specialist. “This upcoming spring, acres will be ready to receive cattle, but in many cases, there isn’t the working capital there to reinvest.”

Perhaps leasing cattle could generate a profit on those acres affording the opportunity to reinvest in the future. For some, leasing also provides a flexibility associated with minimizing the long-term commitment of running cattle year-round.

They will share helpful advice with navigating these arrangements. Followed by Jennifer Lutes, MU Extension ag business specialist, presenting “Cattle Leasing Options.”

Tim Schnakenberg, area agronomist with MU Extension, will make recommendations on how to calculate stocking rates to maximize these lease options without running out of ground.

Finally, Chez Kleeman, from the USDA, will round out the evening by presenting, “How to protect your calf crop from black vultures” just in time for Spring calving.

“The planning committee had your farm’s bottom line in mind when planning the 2024 conference,” Bluel said. “We hope you’ll reserve your spot and bring a friend to this in-person educational event.”

The First Christian Church, at 905 Old Exeter Road in Cassville, will host the meeting from 6-9:15 p.m.

The Extension asks producers planning to attend to pre-register for the $5 event.
