Cassville volleyball lands No. 5 seed

The Cassville volleyball team opens district play on Tuesday, having earned the No. 5 seed in the Class 3, District 12 tournament.

The Lady Wildcats (5-23-2) face No. 4 East Newton (11-13) in their opener, set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Mt. Vernon. The winner of that contest will meet the tournament host, No. 1-seeded Lady Mountaineers (15-11-2) in the semifinals at 6 p.m. on Oct. 24.

On the lower half of the bracket, No. 2 Monett (17-82) awaits the winner of No. 3 Lamar (15-13-2) and No. 6 Seneca (0-21-1) in the second semifinal, set for 7 p.m. Oct. 24.

The championship match is Oct. 26 at 4:30 p.m.

Cassville carries one win over district opponents into the tournament, defeating Seneca at home this season, 3-1 (2515-19-25, 26-24, 25-23). The Lady Wildcats played at Mt. Vernon on Thursday, falling in straight sets (10-25, 17-25, 13-25).

Losses also came earlier this season to East Newton, 3-1 (25-20, 20-25, 20-25, 14-25); Monett, 3-0 (19-25, 16-25, 17-25); and Lamar, 3-0 (18-25, 16-25, 14-25).

The young Cassville squad, with only two seniors, has had a difficult road schedule this season, playing only seven of their 25 contests at home.

The Lady Wildcats went 2-2-1 at the Mustang Volleyball Classic in McDonald County on Saturday, defeating McDonald County JV and Seneca, falling to McDonald County and New Heights, and tying New Heights.

The season finale was Tuesday night against Aurora, with the result unavailable at presstime.
