On home turf

The Cassville softball team is starting the postseason on home turf.

The Lady Wildcats (1713) earned the No. 2 seed in the Class 3, District 6 tournament — which Cassville is hosting — and opens play on Thursday at 5 p.m. against No. 7 Harrisonville (6-15).

Nevada (19-5) earned the No. 1 seed and plays No. 8 Aurora (2-23) at 1 p.m. Thursday. The winner of that contest will meet the winner of No. 4 Seneca (7-23) and No. 5 Logan-Rogersville (9-17) in the semifinals at 11 a.m. Saturday.

On the bottom of the bracket, the Cassville-Harrisonville winner will take on the winner of No. 3 Holden (16-11) and No. 6 Clinton (7-15) in the other semifinal at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The district championship game is at 5 p.m. on Monday.

The Lady Wildcats hold wins this season over Seneca, 7-3; Logan-Rogersville, 5-4; and Aurora, 7-2, 7-0 and 11-1. Cassville lost an earlier season contest to Seneca, 2-1, and has not played Harrisonville, Holden or Clinton.

It is the first-ever matchup against Harrisonville in Missouri State High School Athletics Association records, and the only common opponent the teams shared this season was Nevada. Cassville bested the Lady Tigers, 7-1, while Harrisonville lost to Nevada, 10-0.

Cassville capped its regular season on Thursday with an 8-7 comeback win over McDonald County at home. It was the fourth win in a row for the Lady Wildcats, who finished the year victorious in six of their last 10.
