Out of sight, out of mind

Missouri is home to thousands of potentially leaking underground storage tanks (USTs) that contain — or once contained — petroleum and other hazardous substances. Buried pre-1988, those tanks have long outlived their average 30-year life spans, and now exist, out-of-sight, out-of-mind, in unknown condition, without oversight and not subject to current regulations, said Ken Koon, director of the Tanks Division, of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

With a countywide burn ban still active, firefighters in the area have been especially busy recently, including battling a pair of blazes in Cassville on Friday and Sunday. 60 years of glistening

As a young child handing out Christmas ornaments at Tomblin’s Jewelry and Gifts, Mattie Hurt, of Cassville, did not know the store would be hers to manage one day. The business celebrated its 60th anniversary in September, with Hurt representing the fourth generation to work at the family-owned operation.
