Established in 1887, Monett has carved its place in American history as railroad town, but who can say just how impactful this town has been?
The Monett Historical Society and Museum can.
The staff and volunteers at the museum can teach all about the extensive history of the city, its schools and the people who have built the area to what is it now.
The museum sits at the corner of Broadway Street and Fifth Street and even the building itself is a historical site.
Built in 1903, the building housing the Museum still bares the name “Monett State Bank” above the entry. The structure was restored in 2017 and became home to the Monett Historical Society and Museum.
With staple exhibits including photos and models guiding residents through the city’s history with the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, as well as a full scale replica of the well loved Gillioz Theater, the museum aims to capture the history and culture that created the Monett as it is known today.
The Museum even boasts that it holds the original city plat so residents and visitors can all compare what was with what is.
For those wanting to take a stroll down memory lane and see Monett’s history, the Museum houses various school yearbooks dating from 1900-2018, as well as artifacts and photos to help residents relive their school days in Monett.
With so much history to discover, each issue, Monett Monthly will be exploring a different aspect of the area within the museum as well as featuring events and local stories to connect Monett’s past and present.
The Museum is open five a days a week, Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
