Winchell wrestles up-weight to Class 1 state qualification

A total of 34 teams took part in the Class 1, District 3 girls wrestling tournament in Nevada on Friday and Saturday, and out of the 10 Lady Wildcats competing, one locked in a qualification to the Class 1 State Wrestling Championships Feb. 26-27 at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.

Sophomore Analeigh Winchell, at 170 pounds, pinned Clinton’s Izzy Yates in 1:41 her opening match, then pinned of Reeds Spring’s Blaiklee Cagle in 2:43 in the quarterfinals. A winning Friday turned into a trying Saturday, as Winchell was pinned by Marshfield’s Gracelynn Bull in 5:31 in the semifinals. The loss put her in the bubble match against Adrian’s Addie Davis, where Winchell advanced to state with a pin in just 35 seconds. In the fourth-place match, Winchell lost a 7-0 decision over Madysen Rayl, of Versailles.

Casey Parsons, Cassville girls wrestling coach, said Winchell just made the weight cut, coming in at 147.1 pounds on Thursday and needing to be 149 pounds Friday to compete. With practice disallowed Wednesday and Thursday, the scratch-plus-four-pounds rule put her within range.

“She gave up 22 pounds and has always been on the lighter side, but she wrestled good,” Parsons said. “In the semi, she met a girl she had beat in Eldon earlier this year. She dropped that match but came back to get the bubble win. She was ready to go for that match and determined this year to qualify. Nerves did not seem to bother her.

“In the third-place match, we try to impart how important it is to get that win [for state seeding], and Analeigh gave it all she had and was exhausted by the end.”

Parsons said the tournament ran behind on Friday, with matches ending around 10 p.m. and the bus returning to Cassville at midnight. Matches on Saturday were also moved up 30 minutes, making the time between even shorter. Parsons praised Winchell’s ability to get the qualification despite how the tiring contributed to some tiredness. Now, Winchell has a week before stepping on the state mat in Columbia.

“We hope to get on the podium.” Parsons said. “There’s only a couple state qualifiers coming in, so that’s a positive for a firsttime qualifier. The first time at state is always nerve-wracking, and it could be anyone on the podium in this 170-pound bracket. She has her work cut out for her, but she is motivated.”

Parsons said goal No. 1 for Winchell in the next seven days is simple, gain some weight.

“Analeigh has to put on some weight and gain strength at 170,” Parsons said. “We’re also fine-tuning some things, like taking shots. Analeigh likes to throw girls, but that won’t work at state. She’s got great hips when she gets on the mat, so we have to take good shots.”

Two more Lady Wildcats barely missed joining Winchell at the big show. At 105 pounds, freshman Allison Deaver was pinned in the quarterfinals and fought her way to the bubble round three matches later. Ultimately, she lost a 9-4 decision to Marshfield’s Bayleigh Cruise.

“Allison’s effort was there, and for a freshman and her first time at districts, it was nerves that cost her,” Parsons said. “She just needs more experience and should get there next year.”

Parsons described Cassville’s other near-qualifier as the biggest heartbreaker, as senior Rebekah Fry, at 155 pounds, fell in the bubble round for the third consecutive season.

“She was winning 15-6 in the third period and just got caught,” Parsons said. “I think she was the better wrestler, but she couldn’t get her arm down quick enough and the girls turned her. The effort and work were there all season — that just happens in wrestling.”

With more than half the squad still freshmen and sophomores, Parsons said the experience gained this year should pay off next year.

“We’re young, and we’ve got to get the experience to get rid of the nerves,” Parsons said. “Next year, we’ll look to come back stronger and qualify more.

We’re excited to have one go to state with as young a team as we have. It’s still big for us to have one going.”
