Thompson, James silver in Monett tourney
Newer names led the Cassville boys wrestling team at the Monett Tournament on Saturday, held at Reeds Spring High School due to Monett’s gym floor being flooded. Tristan Thompson, at 157 pounds, and Riley James, at 150 pounds, both earned second-place medals for Cassville. Thompson earned three pins and a 3-2 decision to make the title bout, but Bolivar’s Riley Beckman proved too much, defeating Thompson in a 15-0 technical fall. James earned a 9-2 decision and two pins in pool play, matching up with Springdale Har-Ber’s (Ark.) Lane Parrish in the championship, where he was pinned in 1:12. A more familiar Cassville wrestling name, senior Jake Anthonysz took third at the tournament, picking up three pins for a semifinal berth, but falling 3-2 to Logan-Rogersville’s Griffin Swearingen. Anthonysz rebounded in the third-place bout with fall of Bolivar’s Toby Bunn in 2:46.

Lady Wildcats wow at Wonder Woman
With four Lady Wildcats bringing home individual medals, it was another successful Wonder Woman for the Cassville girls wrestling team over Christmas break. One of the largest tournaments in the area, Wonder Woman boasts 620 participants from 84 teams and five states. As a team, Cassville finished 11th. Annie Moore, at 120, and Faith James, at 135, led Cassville with fifth-place finishes. Moore wrestled six matches over two days, pinning her way to the semifinals before suffering a pin in that match and in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth-place match, she pinned her opponent in 4:40. James wrestled the second-most matches at eight, falling in the quarterfinals but battling back in two matches to reach the consolation semifinals. After losing there, she pinned her fifth-place opponent in 3:34. Also medaling for Cassville were Kailey Artherton, at 115 pounds, and Hailey Roark, at 140 pounds. Artherton wrestled nine times in the tournament, pinned by Nixa’s Kelsey Watts in pool play and pushed into the consolation bracket, where she pinned three in a row and earned a 7-2 decision over another to reach the consolation semifinals. After falling in that match, she met Watts again and suffered the same fate. Roark fell in the quarterfinals and fought her way back to the consolation semis, but she was pinned in that match and the fifth-place contest.

Lady Wildcats start new year strong
The Cassville girls basketball team (11-3) started 2023 with a pair of wins, defeating Purdy, 48-24, at home Jan. 3, then bagging a 44-42 overtime win over Miami (Okla.) on the road on Friday. Against the Lady Eagles, Madison Halterman and Pazlee Burbridge led with 13 points each. Hailey Goutney added 6, and 4 each came from Marianne McCrackin, Elly Ramaeker and Ashlynn Bryan. Kyler Hayward and Jaelynn Stoufer rounded out the scoring with 2 each. Against Miami, McCrackin and Bryan led with 12 each, Burbridge put up 10, Halterman added 6, and Hayward and Maci Barton each contributed 2. Cassville played at Seneca, with the result not available at presstime. The Lady Wildcats travel to Lamar on Thursday.
