War Ending, Former President Is Dead: News in this week saw two of the biggest stories of recent months, in the announced cease fire Vietnam and the death of former president Lyndon Johnson. President Nixon announced the long-awaited peace settlement in south-east Asia Tuesday evening. He said American withdrawals, return of return of POW’s and accounting of MIA’s was scheduled by March 1. Former President Johnson, the 36th president of the United States, died late Monday after suffering a heart attack at his ranch near Johnson City, Texas. His death came just one month following that of former President Harry S. Truman in Independence, Mo. Full texts of the peace settlement that would conclude the longest war in the nation’s history, were to be made available later today. In the crowds viewing these second Inauguration of President Richard Nixon in Washington, D.C. Saturday was a group of local ladies Included were Mrs. Maybell Mandell, Mrs. Thelma Cooper Mrs. Irene Saggers, Mrs. Esther Webster and Mrs. Jean Amos. Elton M. Henson, who has been a stockholder in the first State Bank of Purdy since late last year, has purchased controlling interest in the business. By action of the directors this week he was named vice-president and chairman of the board. New programs announced for the bank include a savings department and remaining open during the lunch hour. New employees announced for the bank Include Katherine Wormington and Carolyn Hutchens.

Cassville’s Wildcats picked home crowd pleaser to cap-are their first win in the Big n Conference this year by romping to an 81-56 win over the Mt. Vernon Mountaineers here Tuesday night. Tough on defense and hot in the field, the ever- improving Wildcats of loach J. C. Duncan could be making their move for loop prominence.

John Mehrens, a 1972 graduate of Ozark Bible College, has been called as associate and youth minister of the First Christian Church of Cassville. Bro. Kenneth Washburn, church pastor, said Mehrens would begin full-time duties here in March.

Three New Business Firms Locate Here Cassville has three new business firms that are opening their doors this week. Included are Craft Cottage, Professional Hearing Systems and Craig Florist. Craft Cottage, owned by Norma Petty, is located on the public square in the Masonic Building, on the east side of Main Street. Featured will be supplies for crafts and consignment articles on display, according to Jo Ann Wells, clerk. Professional Hearing Systems is located in the German Building in the south part of town. Owned by Mary Martin Willoughby, services for hard of hearing persons will be provided by Sharon Whitman and Don Sheppard. Craig Florist, owned by Mrs. Nancy Craig and Mrs. Rhonda Craig, opens Thursday, also in the German Building on east Fifth Street. Mrs. Debbie Miekley will assist in the business which will feature florist services for all occasions.

Jon L. Horner, a sophomore at Drury college in Springfield has been named to the dean’s honor list for achieving at least a 3.6 grade average for the fall semester. The CHS grad is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Horner of Cassville.

A spokesman for the Wheaton board of education acknowledged Tuesday night that Cassville middle school principal Charles Cudney had signed a contract to become superintendent of the Wheaton schools beginning next year. Lynn Dilbeck, board president, said Cudney would replace Bob Murray who had resigned and was leaving the education field. Cudncy, with the local schools two years, will assume the post at the end of this school year.

Hopes of a move of patients into the new wing of South Barry County Hospital in Cassville this week were dashed by obvious work continuation. This is a corridor of the wing, still containing rolls of carpet and boxes of floor tile. Construction crews say arrival of equipment and completion of complex wiring requirements will probably delay another two weeks the use of the new wing. When the move is completed in the 18 bed facility, crews will turn their attention to remodeling present patient areas into expanded spaces for a number of hospital services.

Two candidates announced for the Cassville board of education. They include John Anglum and Bill Wolf. Anglum, a Cassville merchant, is past president of the Chamber of Commerce. Wolf, a farmer, is a former bus driver. Incumbents Ernest Cowherd and Dr. Mary Newman have not announced intentions for the April election. Deadline for filing is February 11.

SPECIAL STAMPS ALL GONE: A supply of 4,000 Elvis stamps at the Cassville post office that went on sale Friday were all gone by about 2 p.m. Monday according to Sherry Miller, left, and James Hayworth, right. The two Cassville staffers were showing the only stamps remaining out of the original supply just before they were purchased virtually as the picture was being taken. Postal authorities weren’t certain when additional Elvis stamps would be received by the Cassville office. They speculated the same rush on the original issue was experienced throughout this area.

Five candidates have filed for three positions on the Cassville R-4 board of education according to Dr. Dan Bailey, superintendent. Gregory Allen, Doug Samuel, Pete Landstad, incumbent Tim Frye and Jeff Cooper are to-date filers before the February 2 deadline. A second incumbent Dennis Ledgerwood has not filed for re-election.

First Impressions, a new janitorial and security firm will begin operations in Cassville the first of the month. Owners are Mr. and Mrs. Doug Samuel. The firm will specialize in commercial and Industrial janitorial services and provide security duties for customers in the area. Employment processes with the new firm are currently underway.

SISTERS ENLISTED IN U.S. AIR FORCE: Wheaton sisters have enlisted in the U.S. Air Force delayed pro-gram, according to recruiting headquarters in Tulsa, Okla. Rebekah and Elizabeth Millican, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Millican entered the military program. Both are scheduled to graduate from Wheaton high school in May and will report for Air Force training June 14. Recruiter Rick Williams said the sisters would attend basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Tex.
