Cassville teams take 8th at SBU

The Cassville girls and boys track and field teams competed at the Class 1-2-3 SBU Invite on April 25, with both squads taking eighth place as teams, with 36 teams on the girls’ side and 37 on the boys’. Jolie Evans also added to her record collection, breaking Cassville’s 3200-meter record with an 11:50.68. The previous record was set by Jordyn Stafford in 2018 with an 11:57. Evans now holds the school’s best times in the 800, 1600 and 3200 runs.

Lady Wildcats win back-to-back

The Cassville girls soccer team (4-10) is on a two-game streak after a 1-0 victory over McDonald County on April 25 and a 4-2 victory over Lighthouse Christian at senior night on Monday. Against the Lady Mustangs, Ashley Alonso scored her first varsity goal, a conference game-winning header off an Emma Berndt cross. Goalkeeper Ava Hinson and the defense also recorded their fourth clean sheet of the season. Against Lighthouse on Monday, Cassville went down 2-1 at halftime but roared back in the second for the win. Berndt led the way with a hat trick, and Dakotah Anderson scored a goal. Dre Gosvener also provided two assists. Cassville hits the road on Thursday to face Fair Grove, and the regular season wraps up on Monday at home against Greenwood. Districts begin on May 13.

Exeter second at Cheri Nash Memorial

The Exeter softball team (12-6) earned two wins in three games on Saturday at the Cheri Nash Memorial Tournament in Verona, falling to Marionville, 4-0, then besting Verona, 15-0, and Wheaton, 17-3. The Lady Tigers also won a Friday night bout with Blue Eye, 20-3. Against Marionville, Exeter did not allow a hit, but they had five errors and the Lady Comets plated 1 run in the fifth and 3 in the sixth. The Lady Tigers had 4 hits, and Dawnee Sorensen went six innings with 4 strikeouts. In two-and-a-half innings of work against the Lady Wildcats, Exeter tallied 8 hits and scored 14 in the second inning. Natalie Crumpler led with 3 hits and 6 RBI. Zeanndrea Brown pitched three innings and struck out 5. Sustained scoring and a dozen hits over four innings earned the win over Wheaton. Sorensen led with 3 hits and 2 RBI, and Hallie Woods garnered 4 RBI. Madison Crumpler went four innings with 4 Ks. Exeter now begins play in the Class 1, District 5 Tournament on Friday against Billings at 5 p.m.

Eagles best Spokane, East Newton

The Purdy baseball team (21-5) earned two wins recently, defeating Spokane, 7-1, and East Newton, 6-3. Against the Owls, Alexis Aldaba and Travis Hughes led with 2 hits and an RBI each, and Hughes went all sevenb innings with 11 Ks. Against East Newton, Hughes led with 2 hits, and JJ Felipe added 2 RBI. Ezequiel Garcia pitched a full game, striking out 6. The Eagles host Lamar on Friday at 5 p.m.

Trojans on four-game heater

The Southwest baseball team (9-10) has won its last four contests, outscoring opponents 40-7. The Trojans defeated Diamond on April 25, 8-0, then McAuley Catholic the next day, 6-5. On Friday, Southwest bested Blue Eye, 9-2, and on Monday, the Trojans neat Greenfield 17-0 in the Miller Invitational. The second game of that tournament was after presstime on Tuesday against Sarcoxie. Against Diamond, Tyler Meek and Brendyn Paulsen had 2 hits each, and Tristan Morgan led with 3 RBI. Charlie Pippin threw six innings and struck out 9. Against McAuley, Caleb Ayer led with 2 RBI, and Hunter Barnes pitched 4.1 innings with 4 Ks. Against Blue Eye, Zac Corwin and Logan Gregory knocked two hits each, and Gregory drove 4 RBI. Paulsen pitched five innings and struck out 6. Finally, against Greenfield, Paulsen led with 3 hits and 4 RBI. Pippin added another 4 RBI and Coy Shrum 3 RBI on a hit each. Pippin pitched three innings and retired 7 batters. The Trojans host Verona on Friday to wrap up the regular season.
