Trojans take Miller Invitational

The Southwest baseball team (11-10) are on a sixgame win streak after going a perfect 3-0 at the Miller Invitational last week, besting Greenfield, 17-0; Sarcoxie, 3-2 in 10 innings; and Miller, 3-0. Against Sarcoxie, Brendyn Paulsen had the walk-off in the 10th after three scoreless innings. Logan Gregory and Tristan Morgan had an RBI each, and Morgan and Zak Corwin split innings with 8 and 6 strikeouts, respectively. Against Miller, Gregory and Charlie Pippin had an RBI each, and Paulsen went 5.2 innings with 8 Ks. The Trojans head to Spokane today (Wednesday) to close out the regular season.

Lady Tigers upset in districts

The Exeter softball team took the the No. 3 seed into the Class 1, District 5 Tournament on Saturday, but the Lady Tigers were upset in an eight-inning, 30-hit spree. The Lady Tigers led 6-0 going into the fifth, but surrendered 5, then 3, to go up 9-8 for the final frame. Billings tied the game in the seventh and plated a winner in the top of the eighth. Exeter outhit Billings 21-9, and the Lady Tigers has 12 errors to the Lady Wildcats’ 8. Kaylyn Weiser, Shea Hilburn and Hallie Woods had 3 hits apiece, and Dawnee Sorensen drove 2 RBI. Sorensen also put in 6.2 innings, striking out 12, and Zeanndrea Brown closed the game with 3 Ks. The Lady Tigers end the season at 12-8.

Eagles back to winning ways

The Purdy baseball team (22-5) extended its winning streak to five on Friday with a walkoff win at home against Lamar, 7-6. Travis Hughes had 2 hits and Alexis Aldaba put up 2 RBI, but Hunter Lee was the man of the day, hitting a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh to deliver the victory. On the mound, Ezequiel Garcia struck out 3. Purdy hosts Mt. Vernon Thursday to end the regular season.

Southwest’s Humphries Advances in 800, mile

Southwest distance runner Robert Humphries advanced to Sectional in the 800 meters and mile at the Class 2 District at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar. Humphries, a junior, ran the mile in 4:56.17, and the 800 in 2:10.62. The Trojans also qualified their 4×800 girls relay. The team of senior Cally Bowyer, juniors Alexis Borwick and Juliauna Sierra, and sophomore Kali Jones were fourth in 11:58.01. Humphries and relay team will run the Class 2 Sectional at College of the Ozarks this weekend.

Other District track highlights:

• Bowyer was 6th in the open 800 in 2:59.17.

• Freshman Vic Tellez was 11th in the mile in 5:26.75

• Freshman Tobi Smith was 12th in the two-mile in 13:57.51.

• Junior Kameron Kelley was 12th in the 800 in 2:31.66

• Humphries was 6th in the 2-mile in 12:02.

Lady Trojans end season in districts

the Southwest softball team saw its season come to a close on Saturday in the Class 2, District 6 Tournament with a 17-2 loss to Mt. Vernon. Southwest had 3 hits in the four-inning contest, with Kaleigh Tull driving in both runs. Tull also pitched 2 innings and struck out 1, and Alli Fosse went 1.1 innings and struck out 1. Southwest ends the season at 8-12.

Southwest to sponsor youth volleyball camp

An elementary volleyball camp will be held at Southwest High School from May 22-26. The camp is open to girls in first through fourth grades and costs $20 ($30 for two sisters). The camp runs Monday to Friday from 10-11:30 a.m. in the high school gymnasium. Coach Steve Voyak and Mandy Henry and the Lady Trojans high school players will teach fundamentals and skills.
