Jail inmate charged with attempted murder

A Cassville man and former Barry County jail inmate has been charged with attempted murder after an altercation at the jail on June 30 requiring the victim to be airlifted to the hospital.

Laane Sneed, 26, of Cassville, is charged with first-degree assault – serious physical injury, equitable to attempted murder in Missouri.

According to a probable cause statement filed by Deputy Daniel Harris, with the Barry County Sheriff’s Office, he was called to the jail aT 8:17 p.m. on June 30 in reference to a physical altercation in progress.

Upon arrival, Harris said he observed Sneed, referenced in the report as Suspect No. 1, on top of Victim No. 1, whose name is withheld, appearing to strike the victim repeatedly. The complaint filed by Barry County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Janice Durbin said the strikes were to the victim’s head and inflicted serious physical injury.

“After stopping the altercation, I found that Victim No. 1 was unconscious and unresponsive,” Harris said in the statement. “Victim No. 1 was lifelined due to his injuries.”

Life Line is Mercy’s helicopter ambulance service. Harris said after the victim was transported for treatment, Sneed allegedly admitted to the assault.

“Suspect No. 1 stated to me that he had applied a chokehold on Victim No. 1 until he had become unconscious and then had continued to strike Victim No. 1 until I had separated them.”

Sneed’s warrant in the case issued a $100,000 cash-only bond, and a bond appearance hearing is set for July 24 in the courtroom of Judge Robert Foulke.

Sneed was released from the Barry County jail on July 5 and transported to the Fulton Reception and Diagnostic Center, sentenced to 7 years on active offenses of two counts of burglary and two counts of receiving stolen property. Those cases stem from 2016 charges, for which he was put on probation. That probation was revoked in August 2017, resulting in the 7-year incarceration sentence.

In January 2018, Sneed was sentenced to 5 years in the Department of Corrections for third-degree assault, second-degree burglary and damage to jail/jail property.
