Jig on the water

August 9, 2023

Water at Roaring River State Park is running low right now, at 13.5 CFS.

The fishing is still really good, and the dry fly fishing is exceptionally good. We are catching trout on elk hair caddis, blue wing olives, Griffiths gnats, parachute Adams and crackle-backs, all of which have been very good the last few weeks.

Beetles, ants and hoppers are still catching trout every day. The water being very clear does create some challenges. Anglers are best right now fishing a 9’ 7X leader when fishing dries.

There are still good numbers of fish being caught on mop flies, mega worms, Saiyan, one worms and head on glow balls,. Orange and yellow have been the best colors.

If fishing traditional nymphs, pheasant tails, sow bugs, burlaps, gold ribbed hairs ears, scuds and a black zebra midges are good choices.

A black or an olive green wooly bugger is always good first thing in the morning.

Plastic worms in orange, white, cheese yellow and pink have been good. Plastic eggs in white, pink and fluorescent yellow were good all last week.

Black spinners are good in the mornings, and brown and green have also been good. The water is very clear, so use 2-pound line for the best chance of catching trout, maybe getting away with 4-pound for a bit in the morning usually.

Good luck this week!
