Free gardening workshop Sept. 9 in Cassville

Barry County Master Gardeners will host a free gardening workshop on Sept. 9 in Cassville.

While the workshop is free, the group asks guests to preregister with the Barry County Extension Office.

“We are excited about our speakers, all of whom are new to our Barry County workshops and are presenting three new topics,” a Master Gardeners press release said. “We have had some requests for how to manage lawns, and Tim Schnackenberg will speak on this topic.

Schnackenberg is the Extension agent in Stone County and was the first in the Barry, Stone or Taney County areas to facilitate a master gardener group in 2002. He is a field specialist in agronomy.

“Creating and maintaining a water garden” will be presented by Linda Siler, who is associated with Carson’s Nursery in Springfield and has worked in this field for 30 years.

“She is an excellent resource and has spoken at many garden events all over the country,” the press release said. “She will share many good ideas for beginners as well as for those who have established water gardens.”

Another presenter is Lissa Teague, who lives in southwest Missouri on a 3-acre farm, where her family gardens and raises a variety of poultry.

“Teague started trading seeds with people around the world seven years ago and feels that it is one of the best things people can do for food security,” the release said. “She is the vice-president of the McDonald County Ladies Homesteading Group and has spoken at the Ozarks Homesteading Expo the last two years.”

Her Facebook page is “The Vintage Tomato and Busy Bee.” Teague will be discussing seed saving and trading.

Those who plan to attend the Sept. 9 workshop are asked to pre-register by calling the Extension Office at 417-8473161, or emailing barryco@missouri.edu.

The workshop will be at the Family Life Center of the First Baptist Church at 602 West St. in Cassville. The doors will open at 9:10 a.m.

“In addition to these great learning opportunities, there will be plants for sale, local vendors with their products, door prizes and lots of good things to eat,” the release said. “Join us for a fun and informative workshop.”
