Jig On the Water, Sept. 13

September 13, 2023

Roaring River’s waters are at 10.7 CFS and low and clear, so the dry fly fishing has been very good.

There are still good caddis hatches every day and blue wing olives every afternoon. Tricos are present in the early morning hours, until about 9 a.m.

We are still experiencing some really good terrestrial fishing, such as ants, beetles, small hoppers and crackle backs with the green holographic tinsel.

Pheasant tails, burlaps, copper Johns, black, red, and root beer zebra midges are working well.

As for leaders, 7X is needed for drys, and 9’ leaders are best, longer if you can throw them. A 6X is good when using nymphs or woolly buggers, and black, olive, tan and brown are all working well.

Spinners in the mornings are still pretty good. Dark colors seem to be working best.

Plastics are very good right now. The 1-inch yellow and pink crawlers caught a bunch of trout this week. Plastic eggs in white, natural fish oil shrimp are working great right now. Plastic worms in white, orange/white, cheese color and pink were very good this week.

Water is very clear, so use 2-pound line for best results. It is too clear for 4-pound line. Good luck this week!
