The Southwest volleyball team picked up their second win last week but also lost their first SWCL Conference game.
The Lady Trojans won at Gentry (Ark.) in four sets and fell to Spokane in three sets at home.
“We dropped the first set at Gentry and looked like we were in trouble,” said Coach Steve Voyak. “But, the girls calmly rallied and earned a huge road win.”
The Lady Trojans made 74 of 79 serves with 11 aces and had only 6 reception errors after the first set.
Setter Laura Jean Henry led the way with 37 assists and made 14 of 15 serves, her first miss of the season after 92 in a row. She is now 112 of 113 for the year.
Sophomore middle Marissa Freeman added 12 kills, 3 aces and a block, while Senior Brooklynn Slye had 10 kills and 27 digs.
In the loss to Spokane, Southwest kept it close but had no answers late.
“They are smart, athletic and well-coached,” Voyak said. “We had some moments, but they were better late in the sets.”
Senior libero Lyric Bernard had 21 receptions and 8 digs, while Freeman added 6 kills, 4 aces and 2 blocks.
Southwest is in the midst of a busy week, traveling to Blue Eye on Monday, hosting Monett Tuesday and going on the road to Thomas Jefferson Thursday. The Lady Trojans will also participate in the Galena Tournament over the weekend.
