The Cassville boys and girls wrestling teams kept themselves busy in the last two weeks of 2023, each competing in two tournaments, with the boys taking 8th in the Diamonds State Duals, and the girls participating in The Wonder Woman, a 79-team competition in Columbia.
On Dec. 15-16, the boys took part in the Harrisonville Christmas Tournament, earning four top-6 finishes. Colton Roark took first at 157 pounds, Riley James was second at 150 pounds, Tristan Thompson placed third at 165 pounds, and Ethan Sizemore was fifth at 285 pounds.
On the same days, the Lady Wildcats competed in the Lady Mustangs Christmas Clash in McDonald County, taking fifth as a team with five top-6 placements. Faith James won her bracket at 135 pounds, Hailey Roark was second at 140 pounds, Analeigh Winchell took third at 145 pounds, Breanna Gordon finished fourth at 120 pounds, and Kennedy Truman earned sixth at 125 pounds.
Both teams parted ways again on Dec. 29-30 fore Diamond and Columbia. The Wildcats went 3-2 as a team in the pool play rounds at the Diamond State Duals, defeating Greenwood, Shiloh Christian (Ark.) and Bentonville West (Ark.) but falling to Pryor (Okla.) and Ozark.
In the quarterfinals of the Championship bracket, Cassville matched with Seneca, winning only two of the 13 contested matches against the eventual runner-up. The Wildcats then fell to Har-Ber (Ark.), and again to Pryor to finish in eighth place.
The Lady Wildcats took on the massive Columbia tournament, The Wonder Woman, with the two best finishes coming in seventh place. Faith James and Hailey Roark achieved the mark at 135 and 140 pounds, respectively.
Nathan Fortner, Cassville wrestling coach, said the teams have battled health issues and are fighting to overcome challenges this season, and there’s still plenty of season left to go.
“The last two tournaments, our kids learned some life lessons about adversity and competing when life gets hard,” he said. “We had sickness run through our wrestling room this break, and many of the boys and girls had to battle through sickness while trying to compete at two of the toughest tournaments on our schedule. We still have a lot to work on too, using these last two tournaments as measuring sticks on where we are at against other teams throughout the state.”
