Jane A. Smith

Jane A. Smith, known as Janie, passed away Friday, March 8, 2024, at Wesley Hospital in Wichita, Kan.

She was born November 26, 1933, in Birch Tree, Mo., the daughter of R.H. Hughson and Peggy (Grimsley) Hughson, who preceded her in death.

Also preceding her in death was her husband, Sidney S. Smith; brother, Lt. Robert Kay Hughson USAF; her aunt, Ruth Smith of Cassville and father-in-law, William “Bill” Smith of Cassville.

Survivors include son’s, Rand Smith (Christian Ermer) of Los Angeles, Calif., Kirby K. Smith (Kimberley) of Kechi, Kan.; four grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

She married her childhood sweetheart Sidney S. Smith and were married 62 years at the time of Sid’s passing.

She graduated from Cassville High School in the class of 1950 and received her BA degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia in 1954. She received her MA degree from Webster College in St. Louis. She first worked as a circulation Librarian at Omaha University, then as a technical cataloger for Boeing Engineering Library in Wichita, then went on to teach Art in St. Louis County and Cassville, Mo. She also owned the Inside Story Floral and Gift shop in Cassville. Janie was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church.

During her working years she was active in NEA, The American Association of University Women, Cassville Chamber of Commerce, Delta Kappa Gamma, Prairie Pioneer Genealogy and The Daughters of the American Revolution.

Graveside services were held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cassville, Missouri. Pastor Jeff Fugitt conducted the services.

The family received friends from 1:00 until 1:45 P.M. Wednesday at Fohn Funeral home in Cassville.
