Sales tax income surges in May

For second year, Cassville’s general fund rises by $34,000

After several months of flat or declining sales tax disbursements, May provided the traditional shot in the arm to local city and county governments, erasing much of the red ink incurred in April.

The seven Barry County cities collecting sales tax took in $810,142.52, up 12 percent from a year ago.

Every city except Wheaton showed a gain.

Cassville made the February downturn look like an anomaly, logging its fifth gain in six months. The city’s 1 percent sales tax supporting the general fund generated $121,224.14, up $24,134.01, or 25 percent, from a year ago.

That put the 2024 calendar and fiscal year sum up almost $34,000 from a year ago, after the 2023 total by May was up more than $34,000 from May of 2022.

Seligman’s 1 percent general fund tax brought in $13,545.66, up $2,608.66, or 24 percent, from last May. It was Seligman’s sixth gain in seven months. The city’s 2024 total is $3,000 ahead of the first five months of 2023.

Purdy erased all of the April drop, as its 1 percent general fund tax received $7,320.10, up $1,639.72 from a year ago. That cut the fiscal year deficient from over $6,700 to just over $5,100 and put the 2024 total down by $1,900 over last year’s pace.

Washburn’s 1 percent general fund tax broke a two-month slump, bringing in $3,826.52, up $710.09 from last May. It was only the second gain of 2024, putting the calendar year total down by a little more than $3,000.

Exeter’s 1 percent general fund tax received $3,514.96, almost besting the May record from The sum was up by $2,086.50, pushing the 2024 total over last year by more than $4,000.

Wheaton’s 1 percent general fund tax delivered $5,570.04 into the city’s general fund, down $1,163.50 from a year ago.

It was the third drop in five months. That put the 2024 total below last year’s pace by more than $3,000.

Wheaton’s sales taxes seem to have returned to an unexplained inequity, as the half-cent tax produced 43 percent of the 1 percent, leaving its 2024 total at 40 percent of the 1 percent.

For only the third time since Monett’s use tax kicked in last June, the city’s sales taxes generated more than the previous year. The city’s two sales taxes supported the general fund at a total of 1 percent produced $204,134.64, up $7,590.66 from a year ago. Monett’s five active sales taxes combined showed a gain of 5 percent over receipts from last May. Adding in the use tax, tax receipts for the month were up by 26 percent.

For 2024, Monett’s general fund receipts without the use tax are down nearly $40,000.

Countywide taxes all reflected big gains.

Barry County’s two older .5 percent sales taxes supporting general operations and road maintenance each generated about $234,903, both up by $24,700, or nearly 12 percent. The .5 percent sales tax for law enforcement brought in $233,033.72, up $29,614.11 from last May.

Barry County’s general fund receipts are up more than $11,700 from the start of 2023.

The .375 percent separate sales tax supporting central dispatching and 911 services yielded $176,173.20, up $18,541, or 12 percent, from a year ago. That put the 2024 total up by almost $9,000.
