The Cassville boys wrestling team turned in a 12-medal performance at the Big 8 Tournament on Friday, with four Wildcats standing atop the podium in first place.

As a team, Cassville finished in second place behind Seneca, with 250 points to the Indians’ 292.5. McDonald County, Monett, Aurora and Nevada rounded out the six-team competition.

Gold medals went to Boni Lopez at 106 pounds, Tristan Thompson at 157 pounds, Riley James at 165 pounds and Colton Roark at 175 pounds.

Lopez was victorious in both his matches, earning a technical fall, 16-0, in his opening match and pinning his second opponent in under 30 seconds. Thompson also had two matches, getting first-round pins in both bouts.

James wrestled five matches undefeated, getting pins in all but one, which was an 18-0 technical fall in his favor. Roark had a similar performance, pinning three opponents in the first round and earning a 17-0 technical fall in his only other match.

Beyond the champions, four Wildcats finished second and four more took third. Runners-up included: Bradley Stumpff at 120 pounds, Rylen Holman at 126 pounds, Jaret Hinson at 138 pounds and Ethan Sizemore at 285 pounds. Those finishing in third included: Kole Fry at 132 pounds, Braydyn Sizemore at 144 pounds, Zach Myers at 190 pounds and Jesse James at 215 pounds.

“I thought the boys wrestled well at conference,” said Nathan Fortner, Cassville boys wrestling coach. “We’ve still got things to work on going into postseason, but I like the way the team bounced back after not wrestling to our full potential the night before against McDonald County.”

In a dual against the Mustangs, the Wildcats won only three contested matches and in the dual, 43-26.

The Wildcats had a dual against Seneca on Tuesday and have another against Monett on Thursday. The final regular-season action is the 62nd People’s Bank of Seneca tournament on Saturday.

The Class 2, District 3 Tournament will be Feb. 21-22 in Seneca.
