The Cassville girls wrestling team had 10 participants in the 6-team Big 8 Conference Championship in Monett on Jan. 22, three of whom returned home with gold medals.
As a team, the Lady Wildcats took third place with 94 points. McDonald County was the runner-up with 107 points, and Nevada won the Big 8 team title with 128 points.
Leading the charge for Cassville were Rebekah Fry, at 155 pounds, Analeigh Winchell, at 170 pounds, and Heather Hall, at 190 pounds, each of whom placed first in their respective weight classes.
All three girls wrestled two matches each, and all matches were won by pin. Only one match, Winchell’s second went past the first period of action.
Allison Deaver, at 105 pounds, Saige Holman, at 140 pounds, and Delight Otto, at 235 pounds, each finished in second place, and third-place finishers included Jackelin Cervantes, at 115 pounds, and Anna Vanderhoef, at 145 pounds.
“I was very proud of how the girls wrestled at the conference tournament,” said Casey Parsons, Cassvilel girls wrestling coach. “We dropped a few matches I think we could have won, but overall, the girls wrestled well. Rebekah, Analeigh, and Heather topped the podium to earn Big 8 Conference Champion in their weight class.
“Heading into postseason, we are going to focus on being able to wrestle the full 6 minutes and different areas for each girl to help her be ready to punch her ticket to the state tournament.”
The Lady Wildcats completed a dual with Carthage on Tuesday and will have another against Monett on Thursday. The final regular-season action is a dual against Neosho on Monday.
The Class 1, District 3 Tournament is set for Feb. 14-15 in Nevada.
