A total of 16 Monett wrestlers competed in the Big 8 girls and boys tournaments Feb. 20 and 22 in Monett and Cassville, with one Lady Wildcat taking gold in her home gym and making history while doing so.

Mary Jastal, at 110 pounds, defeated a pair of opponents with first-round pins to take first place in the six-team event. The result makes her the first ever Lady Cub to win four straight Big 8 titles

Her teammates, 105-pounder Samantha Cosper and 115-pounder Guadalupe Rodriguez, took third and fourth in their respective round robins.

For the boys, two Cubs came close to Conference glory but met buzzsaws along the way.

Henry Reed, at 165 pounds, pinned his way through his four opponents, setting up a defacto championship in round five against Cassville’s Riley James. The two-time state medalist defeated Reed by technical fall, giving Reed the silver.

At 190 pounds, Kaleb Farris went 2-2 on the day to get a runner-up medal. His first loss came to Big 8 champion Jace Renfro, state runner up at 190 last year.

Third place medals went to Dyson Cutbirth at 106 pounds, Jaxon Stout at 126 pounds, Wyatt Reed at 157 pounds and Hrodgar Wetzel at 285 pounds.

Both wrestling squads are beginning to turn their heads toward districts, which for the girls is Feb. 14-15 in Nevada, and for the boys is Feb. 21-22 in Seneca.
