From the garden

Barry County Community Garden in Cassville has blossomed into a vibrant hub for local residents seeking to connect with nature, promote healthy living, and strengthen community ties.

Established in the heart of Barry County, the garden brings together individuals of all ages and backgrounds with a shared passion for sustainable living and fresh, homegrown produce.

At the community garden, participants are provided with individual plots or shared spaces where they can grow vegetables, herbs and flowers. The garden serves as an outdoor classroom where seasoned gardeners mentor beginners on techniques ranging from pest control to crop rotation.

This hands-on approach not only enhances gardening skills but also fosters an appreciation for the natural world and sustainable practices.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the garden is its emphasis on community engagement. Grow boxes were donated by Barry County Ready Mix. Water and land was donated by Aire Serv of Cassville. Dirt was donated City of Cassville. Mulch was donated by Barry County Electric.

Seeds, plants and educational classes were donated by Harvick Farms. Sponsorships were donated by Crowder College. This was all, then, spearheaded by the University of Missouri Extension program.

Food is grown here locally and donated to the Cassville Food Pantry to help meet local needs. Workshops and seasonal events are organized to educate participants about environmental stewardship, local food systems and conservation practices.

These gatherings create a lively space for exchanging ideas and building friendships. Local schools and organizations have also partnered with the garden to incorporate it into their education programs, ensuring that the values of sustainability and community support are passed on to the next generation.

The Barry County Community Garden stands as a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together. Its leaders are committed to inclusivity and ensuring that everyone, regardless of gardening experience or economic background, has the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of growing their own food.

In an era when urban development and technological distractions often pull people away from nature, this garden offers a refreshing return to earth, creativity and collaboration.

Residents and visitors of all ages are invited to join this flourishing initiative, contribute to the bounty, and witness firsthand the transformative power of community gardening.

Workdays will begin again in March. Please see the Barry County Community Garden Facebook page for updates, contact and educational information.

The garden is located at 10160 Farm Road 2160, just outside of Cassville near Crowder College.
