Good question, no answer
“Why is the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) allowing Denali Water Solutions to operate illegally in Missouri?” The question was posed repeatedly by the overflow crowd at Fairview Friday night after a presentation by environmental attorney Stephen Jeffery, who serves as legal counsel for SLUDGE (Stop Land Use Damaging our Ground and Environment). The SLUDGE-hosted chili supper and informational event in the John Q.

Sales taxes rebound in October
After a sluggish September quarterly report, sales tax revenues to local municipal and county governments shot up in October, improving prospects for an end-of-the-end upswing. The seven Barry County cities collecting sales tax received $849,778.81, up 18 percent from a year ago.

News briefs, Nov. 15
A silent auction, consisting of donations from area businesses, will be held on Thursday at the Bayless-Salyer House in Cassville from 5-8 p.m. All proceeds from the fundraiser will support Project Graduation, which gives graduation Cassville High School seniors a safe and fun environment to celebrate their accomplishment as a class.

SLUDGE targets DNR
Before 1972, open dumps were the norm in Missouri. After a two-year survey prior to that time, the state health department determined the dumps, plus authorized land waste-disposal sites, were causing serious threats to human health and the environment.
Mercy Cassville earns national recognition
Mercy Hospital Cassville has earned a national recognition, named a 2023 Top 100 Critical Access Hospital by The Chartis Center for Rural Health. Mercy Cassville is one of only four hospitals in the state to receive the recognition.
Stake presidency changes
Recently, the Monett Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints had a change in its stake presidency. Although the name “Monett” might give a false idea that the Monett Stake only comprises the town of Monett, the stake reaches as far north as Cedar County, as far south as the Arkansas border, just shy of Billings on the east and some places near the Kansas border on the west.
