Woman airlifted from fiery crash
Two juveniles were injured and an Aurora woman was arrested and airlifted from the scene of a vehicle wreck on Highway 39, six miles south of Aurora, after the vehicle caught fire at about 7:40 p.m. According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, Kiera Moore, 34, of Aurora, was driving a 2009 Ford Escape northbound when her vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree, then caught fire.

Following the tree and limb damage from Sunday’s overnight storm, Barry County Sheriff Danny Boyd said deputies are looking to volunteer their time to help in the cleanup. Any person who has tree or limb damage in their yard and is disabled or physically unable to clean it may call the office at 417-847-6556 and ask for Boyd to schedule a cleanup.

Riding into a second century
Not many people live to see 100 years old, and when Wheaton resident Floyd Hughes hit the mark on July 19, he knew the best way to celebrate — riding his bike through town. Starting at his home by the Methodist Church, which he joined with his wife more than 70 years ago, Hughes and more than 50 family and friends rode a few blocks down East Santee Street, across to Main and back around to his home.

Video depicts deputy-inmate incident at jail
A Sunshine request has revealed a 2022 incident where a deputy at the Sheriff’s Office is depicted on video allegedly choking an individual being booked into the Barry County jail. Terry Burgess, Seligman police officer who is running against Sheriff Danny Boyd in 2024, obtained video and reports of the April 1, 2022, incident, saying he aims to bring the issue to light after he said no action was taken at the time.

‘Touch a Truck’ — read a book
The Barry County Affiliate of Imagination Library hosted an event Thursday that gave youth the chance to see county emergency vehicles up close. The “Touch a Truck” event, held at the Cassville Branch Library, brought fire, EMS, the sheriff’s office and more to the Library parking lot, and indoors, games, refreshments and giveaways were available.

Trees, limbs litter highways after 70-mph gusts
A bow echo storm created damaging wind gusts in Barry County on Friday, uprooting trees and causing road blockages and home damage, especially in the Purdy and Butterfield areas. David Compton, Barry County Emergency Management director, said most of the damage was to large, mature trees, pushed over from the root ball and covering areas of Highways 97, 148, 76 and 39.

Troutman Media LLC buys Cassville Democrat building
Troutman Media LLC, which purchased the Cassville Democrat newspaper in January, hopes to revitalize its office after purchasing the building on June 7. Kyle Troutman and Jordan Troutman, managers of Troutman Media LLC, purchased the property from Barry County Properties LLC for an undisclosed amount.
