Michelle Hilburn: Beyond the classroom
As educators, we don’t measure success by the money we make or even by the degrees we collect, though many of us achieve a lot academically. For me, after 19 years of teaching and several college degrees, what fills me with the most pride is the impact I’ve had on my students.

Meeting students’ needs outside of the classroom is a challenge, and the Purdy school district is taking it head on by implementing the Care to Learn program at the district this year. A Springfield-based non-profit with three primary goals: meeting students’ needs regarding health, hunger and hygiene.

Burt completes mission in Australia, going to BYU
Being involved in uplifting activities is something that Tatum Alyse Burt, of Purdy, daughter of Samantha and Nathan Burt, has always done. Burt recently returned from sharing the hope of the gospel of Jesus Christ in the Australia Perth Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. During her Purdy High School years, Burt participated in choir, band, track and dual credit, graduating in 2021.

Lady Eagles settling into youthful season
The Purdy volleyball team may be the youngest Coach Barry Wheeler has had throughout his 38-year career, and it will rely on four returners among five freshmen to reach its goals this season. Leading the squad this year are three seniors — setter Zoey Webb, middle hitter Gracie Patton and defensive specialist Brooklynn Bunch — as well as a junior, outside hitter Lauren Brooks.
Purdy Council orders action on unpaid water bills
The Purdy City Council authorized a massive shut-off of water services to unpaid customers during its August meeting. Clerk Katy Prock, noting council members discussed raising water rates, presented a list of 72 customers with water bills in arrears, representing 15 percent of the customer base and a total of $12,031.32 in overdue bills.

According to the Purdy Police Department, on July 3, one of the pyrotechnicians setting off the fireworks display at the Terry Family Fireworks Show in Purdy was seriously injured when the final mortar shell misfired, striking him in the shoulder. The technician was conscious and alert at the scene and was transported by ground ambulance to a trauma center in Springfield.
