Talented Southwest track squads put focus on training
The Southwest High School boys and girls track teams have a calvary of new faces on the pavement this season, with seven returners looking to lead 17 newcomers this season.

Coming off back-to-back district championships, it was a tall order for the Southwest boys basketball team to reach the same heights this season.

Trojans trying for trio of trophies
The past two seasons for the Southwest boys basketball team have been a couple of the best in its history. Winning back-to-back district titles under Rusty Roe, the Trojans are under new management this season with Jeff Treat taking over coaching duties.

Southwest off and running
Only five meets into the season, Southwest’s track team began to see personal records fall. Led by seniors Robert Humphries, Kameron Kelley and Juliauna Sierra, the Trojans and Lady Trojans have lofty goals this year, hoping to use its strengths in distance running to reach the state meet in May.

Trojans bring strength on the mound
The Southwest baseball team will rely on its pitching to produce another winning season, hoping to stay healthy and make a run more district hardware for Trojans athletics this year. Derek Mann, Southwest baseball coach, said the Trojans were hit hard by injuries at the start of last season, going 1-9 in their first 10 but finishing 13-11 overall.

Trojans reflect on successful season
In the summer of 2023, the Southwest boys basketball team declined to set any expectations. Coming off its first district title in 57 years, the Trojans had lost half the team to graduation and had yet to find an identity.

Paulsen wins 4th-ever All-State award for Trojans basketball
Southwest High School senior Brendyn Paulsen has been named to the Class 3 All-State Team. A First Team All-District, All-Conference and All-Area selection, as well as district and conference Player of the Year, Paulsen averaged 18.9 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game this year.
Back-to-back!
A sizable contingent of Southwest boys basketball fans collectively held their breath on Saturday as a Lamar 3-pointer sailed toward the basket as the game’s final buzzer sounded. The shot missed, and that held breath escaped into screams of joy as the Trojans secured their second consecutive Class 3, District 12 championship.
